Statefree is a community-centered organization that makes statelessness visible and advocates for the equal rights of stateless people.
Statefree's work is co-created by the perspectives and expertise of stateless people. This leads to solutions that are based on real experiences and drive political change.
People worldwide are stateless. Since less than half of the world's countries report data on statelessness, only 4.4 million of them appear in official statistics.
In Germany, people are officially stateless. However, the actual number is much higher, as many people have „nationality not specified” or an incorrect nationality listed in their passports.
Children are officially stateless in Germany. Most of them were born here.
Causes of Statelessness

What we do
Community
The main focus of our work is the Statefree Community. It is a space for stateless people to connect, share experiences, and find a sense of belonging. Here, stateless people and their allies come together to exchange ideas and learn from each other.
Visibility
Our goal is equal access to rights and full social participation for stateless people in Germany. To this end, we are also working politically on structural changes, such as a transparent procedure for determining statelessness.
Equal Rights
True self-empowerment is based on equal access to rights. Our goal is to create inclusion and full participation for stateless people in Germany. Statefree aims to put statelessness on the social and political agenda. We want to ensure that the most important experts on statelessness are adequately represented in the development of solutions: stateless people themselves. To this end, we proactively work with politicians on solutions, such as a determination procedure for statelessness.
